Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
