EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
